Psychological manipulation is a kind of social influence that manipulates the mind and is very deceptive. The point is to make a person think and believe what he or she is being told, without questioning or using their own judgment.
With the psychological manipulation, brainwashing is also very prevalent in 1984. During Two Minute Hate, emotions would cause the members of the outer party to scream at the screen at their “enemy” Goldstein who went against Big Brother, their master. This was a time to make sure the members of the outer party had the same thoughts against Goldstein and support to Big Brother. The members of the inner party brainwashed the people to all think alike so to make sure there is no independent thought. Other examples of psychological manipulation are Newspeak or using the media to force the people to only think a certain way. Also Junior Spies which would put another eye on parents to make sure they are obeying Big Brother, otherwise their children will expose them to the inner party. This took away the freedom in the home and added fear. Another way that, and the most direct form of psychological manipulation is the thought police. They were “police” officers that would expose you and cause you to “evaporate” if there was any sign that you were thinking independently from Big Brother. Psychological manipulation of the government in 1984 caused people to fear not only the government, but themselves.
