對於來問喪弔唁的親友賓客，古時候喪家應於卒哭或除靈之後，分胙於弔者，即把祭拜用的肉分給來弔喪的親友享用。 臺灣早期是以豬肉、龜粿分給親友餉用，以誌謝悃，稱為「答紙」或「答紙禮」。 現今喪家對於親友賓客的弔祭，也會準備一些禮品回贈，但已不是祭拜的豬肉或粿品，而是用其他物品替代。 這些回贈的禮品，一般稱為「答禮物品」。 答禮物品最普遍的就是毛巾和手帕了。
牲禮有一般用三牲（豬鴨魚或豬雞魚），也有用五牲（豬鵝雞魚魚或豬鴨雞魚豆干）者。 不過，現今都已委由喪家代為購買祭拜，而宗親或姻親則以奠儀方式給付現金，稱為「貼拜」。
至於什麼樣的骨灰罐對後代子孫較好。 一般來說，骨灰罐的選擇，是替往生者挑選一個適合場所。 所以材質本身對後代應較不會產生影響。
毛巾一般價格每條約50.元，手帕約20.元。 另外，對於近親的弔祭，有所謂的「貼拜」。 外燴 即近親（宗親、姻親）的弔祭，仍保留比較傳統形式，依禮應具備牲禮粿品來祭拜亡者。
「賻贈」是親友用金錢協助喪家殮葬（辦理喪事）的意思。 「楮敬」是以金錢供喪家買香燭銀紙於靈前焚燒使用。 奠儀的多寡，視交情親疏遠近而不同，但原則是要奇數，不能雙數。 一般金額大都是在1,500.~5,000.元之間（團體或特殊交情例外）。 牲禮宗親或姻親依傳統禮儀，應於出殯前一天備牲禮至亡者靈前祭拜。
