One thing that the text mentioned was that some models used in college admission decisions have previously "falsely reject qualified black applicants more often than qualified white applicants" (p. 10). I have read an article before that talked about a similar occurrence, so it may not be an unusual thing to happen. This excerpt says that it occurred because the designer did not anticipate it, but how? How did the model look at this race variable and declare one as having more worth than another? Was it because of the current demographics of the college? Also, if this small attribute was taken into consideration, then what else does the model look for? If this wasn't the first time that people discovered that the models are putting in race as a factor, then why don't colleges take away the "What is your race" question from applications?
