Avanos Medical, a U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) company is recalling Cortrak*2 the enteral access system because of a misplaced nasoenteric tube or nasogastric tubs that could have led to injuries or even deaths of patients. The recall includes 629 devices in use in the United States.

Avanos Medical released a recall communication stating that there has been an overall 60 injuries and 23 deaths from mistaken placement, in 2015, because of the CORTRAK*2 Entry Access System. Avanos Medical There have been a variety of injuries, such as pneumothorax, respiratory failure, collapsed lung perforation (a hole through the wall of your lungs or the bowel) pneumonia, and pleural effusion, which is the excess fluid that forms between your lungs as well as the chest cavity.
Avanos Medical has presented a plan to provide users updated labels, to verify the proper place of the nasogastric (and nasal) tubes prior to their use.
The Avanos warning is the second warning that the FDA issued in 2022 concerning tube feeding through the stomach. Two cases of strangulation in children occurred in 2021. They were as a result of a tube device that was wrapped around the patient's neck.
