Avanos Medical Recalls The Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System

Avanos has promoted its Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System due to its screen-based visualization of the stomach or small bowel to assist in the proper positioning of a medical feed tube. Patients could suffer injuries to their vocal chords or trachea, if the tube is inserted improperly. The recall notification from Avanos Medical states that as of 2015, there were 60 deaths of patients and 23 injuries due to the incorrect placement of nasogastric feed tube when using the CORTRAK*2 enteral access system. There have been several injuries, including pneumothorax, respiratory failure or collapsed lung perforation (a opening in the wall of your lungs or bowel) pneumonia, and pleural effusion, which is an excess of fluid between your lungs and your chest cavity.
