This week, I was able to get back on track following the break for Christmas. We're in the process of upgrading our database versions and will be switching next week. We also reviewed an ADR (architecture decisions record) for email notifications.

Books
This week I read:
M. John Harrison's Centauri Device
This book is a fantastic example of why I love the S. F. Masterworks series. It was a good read, but a bit confusing in parts (or perhaps I was tired at the time) but certainly enjoyable and filled with interesting ideas (like the space anarchists and their spacecrafts that they captured from aliens). The wikipedia article reveals that this book revolutionized Space Opera by turning the old tropes upside down!
Now I know I can look back on other books I've read and see the influence they had on me. And I know from the source of those ideas.
Gaming
I bought Dyson Sphere Program this week. I'd heard about it for a while but hadn't felt the urge to test it out this week I felt the urge.
It took me 30 hours to complete it in just four days. It's addicting and great fun. It's like solving a problem. If you get it correctly it's a satisfying way to build small and efficient assembly lines. Add to that the slight difficulty of wanting to build neat factories, but building against an asymmetrical grid on a circle (so as you move towards the poles the gridlines shift), and that adds an extra the challenge.
I'm not quite there yet with the dyson sphere. The components aren't working. I keep running out of oil due to the fact that I'm not burning hydrogen quickly enough and the conveyor belts back up and stop the refineries.
It's also a lot of fun.
Miscellaneous
This week, I set up fail2ban and an IP blocklist on my VPN. As usual, NixOS made this unexpectedly simple, and now I have an improved firewall.
The issue with blocking IPs is that it's easy to circumvent however, there's a particular IP that keeps trying to connect to my (whitelisted) Minecraft server, and seeing them in the logs multiple times a day was getting annoying.
