Motivation, whether it comes from inside someone or from an external source, is important to students' success because it helps students stay dedicated. Motivation can be particularly important to students in a magnet, or a specialized academic program, because magnet-level classes can often be especially challenging. If magnet students all have an appropriate form of motivation, then they would most likely be able to keep up with the demands of their program while learning from and enjoying their academic experience.

However, not all magnet students may be adequately motivated, and there is little research on the topic because magnet students are such a specific population. If magnet students don't understand their own motivation, they may end up unmotivated and unhappy in their program. Therefore, I surveyed high school students in magnet programs to provide more research on what motivates them and how this correlates with their success. Hopefully, this could be insightful to current and future magnet students and allow them to reflect on what truly motivates them, helping them pave their own path to success.
