Craftbukkit is a third-party Minecraft mod that allows you to use Minecraft plugins. The mod is available at Bukkit.org and runs as an JAR file that runs the Minecraft server JAR.
After downloading the most current Craftbukkit version, rename the file to craftbukkit.jar. You can download the development build or the recommended build. Recommended builds are more stable but they're often older versions of Minecraft which users with updated clients can't connect to. Unless the recommended build is also updated to the latest version of Minecraft you'll want to run the development build.
GAMES
Copy the craftbukkit.jar file to the same directory that contains your minecraft_server.jar. This article assumes that you already have a functioning Minecraft Server. If not, check out my article on setting up your own Minecraft Server.
Start your Minecraft server the way you normally would however, replace minecraft_server.jar with craftbukkit.jar. It is possible to increase the amount of RAM that is allocated to your server, since Craftbukkit will require more memory, particularly when using plugins. Craftbukkit will start itself and create the configuration file bukkit.yml. This file doesn't need to be changed and configuration is pretty basic.
The next step is to install plugins. Plugins can be downloaded from the Bukkit.org website under plugins.bukkit.org. You can search for plugins by keywords or sort them by category. Plugins which haven't been updated recently likely won't work with the latest version of Craftbukkit/Minecraft. You can download the plugin from a webpage.
It is very easy to download and install an application. If you get an JAR file, simply place the file in the "plugins" folder that is automatically created by Craftbukkit. This modification will only be effective when the server is restarted. The plugin also creates a folder with the same name as the JAR file, which contains configuration files as well as other assets required to use the plugin.
If you downloaded a zip/rar file, you'll need to dezip/unrar it with software that handles these extensions. Transfer these files to your plugin folder and make sure the JAR file is located in the root of the plugins folder. Restart your server and the new plugin will be activated.
