'Minecraft Earth' will Shut down On June 30th

A little over a year after bringing Minecraft Earth in the US, Microsoft announced this week it will shut down the game later in the year. Minecraft Earth players will have until June 30, 2021 to play the game in augmented reality. It's no longer available for download from app marketplaces and it's not available for purchase.



Developer Mojang Studios attributed the shutdown to the coronavirus epidemic and all the changes in everyday life that it has brought. "Minecraft Earth was designed around free movement and collaborative play which have become near impossible in the current world situation," the studio said. Mojang, along with Niantic's Pokemon Go, had modified the game to make it more accessible at home. Evidently, these tweaks weren't enough.

- Minecraft (@Minecraft), January 5, 2021. But there is a silver lining to the news of today: Mojang plans on presenting Minecraft Earth in style. Mojang is rolling out one last update for Minecraft Earth, which it claims contains changes "to make your time in Minecraft Earth as enjoyable as possible." In addition to other improvements, the update does away with real-money transactions and drastically reduces the amount of time it will take players to design and build things within the game. It also allows players to look through all the content Mojang was working with before today's announcement. "We hope that these changes will allow players to explore, create and build more while remaining secure inside," the studio said.



When June 30th arrives and ends, Microsoft will delete player data on July 1st. You'll get a token when you spend money in Minecraft Earth during the game's existence. This token will allow you to download the Bedrock version of Minecraft on your phone. More information about the shutdown is available on the Minecraft website.



This is a disappointing conclusion for Minecraft Earth for Microsoft. When we first saw the game in action at WWDC 2019, it was clear that Microsoft was optimistic about the game. It's not a great indication for consumers using AR applications in the near future that Minecraft Earth was unable to outlast the epidemic with all of Microsoft’s resources.
