Minecraft will not Allow NFTs Or Blockchain Technologies - IGN

While certain developers embrace the controversial use of digital tokens, the developers at Minecraft have taken a stand against NFTs and blockchain technologies.

Their blog post is in response to feedback from their community members asking for "clarification and transparency" on what Mojang Studios and Minecraft stand on the issue.

"While we are updating our Minecraft Usage Guides to provide more in-depth information on the latest technologies," the post states. Steam recently banned blockchain games and cryptocurrency-emitting games.

Some creators use blockchain technology for selling things like worlds and skins. But the Minecraft folks wish for their community to be an environment where everyone has the same content. They believe NFTs could create models of scarcity which are not compatible with our guidelines.

They add that "to ensure that players have an enjoyable and safe experience, blockchain technology aren't permitted to be integrated into our client or server apps and neither can Minecraft game-specific content like skins, worlds, or persona items be used by blockchain technology to create digital assets."

The decision is made in part, Mojang says, because NFTs and blockchain do not align with "Minecraft's values of creative inclusion and playing with each other" and "create an environment of haves and the have-nots."

Mojang Studios wants to be there for their customers. They are aware that NFTs aren't always reliable and could end up costing players who purchase them.

Their position is in a time when some developers have signed anti-NFT promises while others who have adopted this technology have been called out as being a money-grabbing. Some, such as Team17 have even made announcements of NFT projects only to end them after their outrage from their community.
