The Cabin in the Woods follows five college friends--Dana, Jules, Holden, Marty and Curt as they embark on a weekend getaway to an isolated cabin in the woods. As they begin to explore their new surroundings, they soon discover that they are not the only ones and that their vacation is taking a dark turn.
The group soon realizes they are playing the larger game of life when they are confronted with numerous horrors which are both supernatural and man-made. As watch Knock at the Cabin progresses, five of them must make it through the night or face certain death.
The group is initially divided in two parts: Dana and Marty stay inside the cabin, while Jules, Holden, and Curt investigate the strange activities going on outside. After a few close calls, Dana and Marty return to the cabin to inform the group that the creatures on the outside have been killed only to find the bodies of Jules, Holden, and Curt are not back.
The remaining two take a trip out to find their companions, and in the process, Dana realizes the monsters are human beings--scientists from a government-run organization who have been transformed into monsters and taken to the cabin for an unconfirmed experiment.
The two manage to locate and rescue their friends, and the five manage to escape the cabin and make it back to their cars. Despite all their efforts, they are unable to defeat the mutant creatures, and they are forced to take refuge in an abandoned mine shaft.
In inside the mining facility, they stumble upon an control room, and they find out the real purpose behind the secret experiment: to create a new type of monster that could be used fight in a conflict. After a brief struggle they can shut down the experiment and escape the mine alive.
In the final analysis, all five of the college buddies survive the ordeal, although they are all severely shocked by their experiences. Despite the horrible experiences they endured however, they're determined to put their incident behind them and go back to their normal lives.
