World of Warcraft Developers Examine The Mobile Gaming App

World of Warcraft developers weigh the mobile gaming app

21 March 2012

World of Warcraft's developers have confirmed that they are looking into porting the game to mobile devices.

Eurogamer interviewed Blizzard Entertainment about the link between a decline in subscribers and the launching of a Star Wars-themed rival game.

The company revealed in November that WoW had 10.3 million users, down from an all-time high of 12 million in 2010.

Others have tried to make WoW work on Android devices However, an official launch could boost Blizzard's earnings.

To date the firm has released only a free Mobile Armoury app to allow players to keep track of their characters and plan their adventures.

The developer's senior producer John Lagrave told Eurogamer that the primary reason his team could not have released an app for mobile that allowed gameplay was because of the problems caused by shrinking the interface.

He stated that he was looking at the possibility of finding a great way to play WoW on the phone.

"The world is moving towards a tiny handheld device... It's foolish for any game designer to not be thinking about this and we're certainly not. We don't think we're foolish."

Competition

Mr Lagrave also signalled that the number of people who pay fees was continuing to "dip" since the last time it released figures.

Bioware and Lucasarts' Star Wars: The Old Republic was launched in December, offering an alternative to the massively multiplayer online (MMO) experience.

In February, Frank Gibeau, President of Electronic Arts' labels, informed analysts that the title has attracted more than 1.7 million active subscribers. Gamers play an average of four hours per day.

Blizzard began offering 20 free WoW levels last year, and Mr Lagrave stated that the idea of extending the trial was now "on the table".

He also said he anticipates an increase in player numbers when the expansion pack becomes available. WOW WIKI The Mists of Panderia update, whose release date is still unknown, will allow players to explore the "lost planet" filled with pandas who are adept in martial arts.

The company also announced that it has ended its relationship with Neteasein China. This will ensure that WoW can be continued to be promoted in China.

Solutions for streaming

While Blizzard is mulling a mobile WoW release, other developers are trying to join the breach.

Vancouver-based Gamestring announced in December of 2010 that it was trying to make the title run on Android-based devices.

It showcased an early "alpha-version" of a hack that allowed the game to run on an HTC phone by streaming data from its servers to a custom touch-based interface.

YouTube users have also uploaded videos that show the game running on tablets running remote desktop applications.

However, such solutions introduce the issue of lag they are more difficult to control than on PC.
