Pickaxes (often abbreviated as picks) are employed to extract ore in Gielinor. Pickaxes can be held in the inventory, kept in the tool belt, or wielded. The tool belt can be used to store the pickaxe, or you can use it to hold one more ore. The pickaxe on the tool belt has an option to right-click to remove it, and adding another pickaxe to the belt will restore the previous one to your inventory.
Pickaxes are useful tools, but they are not intended to be weapons. They have the same speed and damage as the barehanded attack.
Two bars of the desired metal can be used to make pickaxes for players. The dwarven army knife, sacred and volatile clay pickaxes, dragon pickaxes, inferno adze, Imcando pickaxe Pickaxe of Earth and Song and crystal pickaxe are not able to be smithed.

Gilded pickaxes [edit edit source edit source
The Liquid Gold Nymph can gild metal pickaxes ranging from bronze to dragon by permitting them to be found in the Lava Flow Mine. Before the Nymph can offer to gild a pickaxe, the player must already own all five pieces of the golden mining suit.
Pickaxes with gilded designs look different, but they're identical to their non-gilded counterparts. Foreman Jaak is able to remove the gilding from gilded pickaxes to restore them to their original condition.
The dwarven army axe, sacred clay pickaxe, inferno adze, orikalkum, crystal, necronium, bane, and elder rune pickaxes are not gold-plated. The Imcando pickaxe, made from a gilded dragon pickaxe is always covered in gold.
Stealing Creation pickaxes[edit
The pickaxes are available only to play the Stealing Creation minigame.
Edit source Edit source
They can be played outside of the minigame.
Volatile pickaxe and sacred clay pickaxe
edit source edit source
These pickaxes are available only for Dungeoneering.
Maintenance [edit
Players were required to repair their pickaxes in the event that they were damaged by the exploding rocks random event. To repair their pickaxe it was necessary go to Nurmof at the Dwarven Mine in Lumbridge or Bob at Bob's Brilliant Axes. Players also used to find their pickaxe heads flying off their handle which they needed to retrieve and return to the handle. But, now, pickaxes don't become damaged or lose their heads due to the elimination of random events.

edit sourceTrivia[edit
- In the early days of
Runescape Classic
there was only one type of pickaxe that was available, simply named
Pickaxe
. It looked like a stainless steel pickaxe and could not be equipped. When various kinds of pickaxes were made available in May 2003, all pickaxes from the bank were changed to bronze pickaxes commonly found today. - The TzHaar Tourist Guide in Varrock Palace Library contains references to an obsidian pickaxe. - Prior to the Mining and Smithing Rework, pickaxes required certain attack levels to be wielded, depending on the type of pickaxe. They were as accurate as other weapons, but could only do half the damage.
