When the mobile-based Minecraft Earth was announced last year, it immediately attracted comparisons to Pokemon Go because of its use of Augmented Reality and location-based games. However, it was quite different (as senior editor Jess Conditt will attest) because it didn't require players to leave your home to participate in its mining and building gameplay. Now, Mattel has added another fun aspect to Minecraft Earth that Pokemon Go can't really boast about: NFC-enabled figurines.

The Boost Mini figurines will retail for $5 each and will include various characters from the Minecraft franchise, including Steve, Alex, creepers, ducks and a cow. Each figurine is adorable on its own. If you hold it up to an NFC-enabled device, special abilities will be available within Minecraft Earth for a specified time. This time period will be displayed by an alarm clock. You'll also earn XP for signing up the mini in the game as an additional incentive to collect all of them (or borrow them from your friends).
The first batch of the spring season includes 20 minis that have 10 abilities. Mattel also has a clip-on pouch that can be clipped onto your belt if you're looking to carry your Minecraft Earth game with you on the move.
If you're not into the new game but you still want to play that delicious Minecraft toy fun, Mattel also announced a bunch of brand new $3.50 blind box minis themed to the classic Minecraft and larger 3.5-inch figures that are tied to the upcoming Minecraft Dungeons. The Redstone Monstrosity, which stands over six inches tall, is especially enjoyable as it's designed to match those toys. The 3.5-inch figurines are $10 and the monstrosity is expected to be priced at $25 when it's launched in the fall.
