lucio fontana on the threshold as art and life should be interspersed with each other since there is no need for keeping a distance between human work and the human. Art is life (creative energy - sexual) Who would have thought that? This is the reason why the most intriguing art is the one which talks about life, that reveals different experiences, recounts specifics, curiosities, or points of view.
When it comes to life, it is necessary to defy the notion of a perfectionism that can be achieved (in response to such expectations, the only art we can refer to is that of the cinema). Failure is the hallmark of being Human The stumbling block upon which we've all fallen at one time or another: impulsive judgement, haste, fear and anger, the constant desire for safety and control bad choices. Don't tell me you have not made any of these errors?
Open: a fresh perspective to view the world from
If we fall, we hurt ourselves more or less and tend to look at that fall, to consider the mistake a fault because due to the expectation we hold of ourselves and other people. The wound is the actual point that we are able to see the truth. It is from here that we stop taking refuge in the idea of perfect (which if it were such shouldn't be hurting) and examine what's damaged: we examine the wound and examine ourselves.
Fontana cut with the awareness that breaking and opening is and tearing since destruction is often the most powerful creative act, especially in a culture that, since a very early stage, we're immersed in a strong, impregnating system of beliefs and models. It's not a coincidence that Fontana said in 1963 in an interview Nerio Minuzzo that:
"The critics have always criticized me, but I have never worried about it, I went on regardless and never accepted the salute of anyone. In the past, they have called me 'the one with the holes', with a little pity. Today, I realize that my holes and cuts have created a taste are accepted and have even found practical applications. In theatres and bars they have ceilings made of holes. Since today, as you can see that people in the street can appreciate the latest designs. The artists are the ones that are the ones who know more '.
When Fontana talks about the street, he is evoking the imagery of imperfection, in which the hole represents the same as any other in which the becoming of life takes place. Fontana is not scared of dirt , nor of the brutality of creative expression: he throws tar on the sculpture of a man and calls it "Black Man".
The cut is transformed into the conquest of space, as an overcoming of painting and sculpture, through a new spatiality that contains both of them: a break from verticality to create a crossing passage.
The palpitation that occurs, both exhaling and inhaling the canvas is reminiscent from afar more scholarly and bourgeois form, of the work that Gina Pane would later do on her skin. The gesture remains the eternal main character in this context, where the art will eventually be destroyed; the wound and the cut represent path, boundary and exchange. The artist herself opens the canvas by splitting it in two and proclaims the canvas's finiteness. the holes become black holes that give depth and make us perceive the infinite , which we'll never understand.
Wait: new things we don't yet know
Fontana called the cuts 'Waits', the openings from which new and unique things emerge that we do not yet know.
When we make a mistake and hurt or injure the other injuring or hurting another, we need to wait for a time before the response. The first reaction is the shock of making a mistake and the failure to overcome, and then finding out the best steps to take to make up for it or avoid it; then we wait for the consequences of the break, that slip, which could actually be an amazing source. But it's not.
Few understood (and understand) this concept because they are constantly judging how reality and human beings should be, too used to the two-dimensionality of the canvas. We keep fighting with all of our might the best practices, the right method of presenting and being as a person in the society, that we rely on norms that ultimately define the concept of normativity.
It's impossible to find anything more confusing. Convinced that we know everything and everything, we apply our standard to every other organism and ecosystem on the planet however, in reality we see it from a narrow and biased perspective that is not in line with reality: Anthropocentrism as well as individual interpretations of the other which are often not the most accurate.
Accept: no perfection in the sense of absolute perfection.
This also applies to this society that wants us to do our best at all costs, without considering that, instead of raising standards, we should accept more of the world the way it is. Do we accept pain? Do we accept death? Do we accept bodies? Do we accept diversity? And, most importantly, once we accept, do you dignify?
Most of the time is it that we are able to hide what does not coincide with the 'perfection' of our own little planet or the universe. It makes us shocked, angry, disgusted and pushed aside, then swept under the carpet, and so we manifest our imperfections, which we actually are, but refuse to accept.
Knowing one's own limits is essential as is recognizing the interconnectedness of everything that is the world system: either we are ALL put in a position to give our best or there is no competition or effort worthwhile, except for the motive of fostering inequality. It is all well and good that some after many hours of work have succeeded and were so fortunate. However, in a larger context, always pushing the boundaries a little further the definition of 'a perfection' in an 'imperfect setting; there is no "perfection" in the absolute sense.
Could this ever exist?
Cut and let the truth be revealed
We can conclude that Fontana was a tyrant, as right from the beginning Fontana rejected the simple ways to be successful, opting instead to try out the untested and the uncertain, that means he decided to leave the idea of being the only one that was successful, he pursued the path of study that led him to unravel certain facts.
For me, and in my very personal view, Fontana is the one who cuts the veil and allows the light through, even if there are black sails that obscure behind the cuts. A spatial artist as well as one of the pioneers of that art understood not solely as a work but also as a gesture which is a gesture that revolves around and in the context of actions in space, and performance as the activation of a narrative, and this is the way it is practised today.
For me, his cuts reveal all of this, opening up new perspectives for art as well as new perspectives on the world , and new questions. The result of this wound is more than pain: the wound is a symbol of mortality, shortness, uncertainty and fragility. A wound can make us question our existence and makes us think the way we think, and this is very important to keep our feet grounded. As difficult as it is to endure and as hard as it is in a perfect tale of our existence, it would be great (and just) to gain knowledge only through positive reinforcements. As long that we as a nation are unwilling to avoid the suffering of others as well as our own, we're bound to remain in the unsolved and to live in an insanity.
So let's enjoy the cinema and its happy endings its beauty and perfection that is taken for granted and which we take as a template for our lives as the visual arts, contrary to what they appear are the children of suffering, and any artist who wants to tell a piece of truth, must pass through the wound.
