If you keep a close watch on the App Store (or have a quick RSS feed following it) you may have seen an app dubbed Minecrafted up on a Monday morning. It's an Minecraft client for iOS and is a new version of the hugely popular indie game that is able to played on an iPhone and can connect to real Minecraft servers. It is not a good idea to be rushing to download it. The application has been removed from the App Store, and you'll get an error message if you try to locate it on the US store.
What's the problem? TUAW approached the creator of the app, Trevor Wilkin, and Wilkin explained to us that his original plan was to create the client, submit it to Apple and then obtain official approval from the makers of Minecraft before putting it up for sale. Apple released it immediately, but Wilkin states that the app was "pretty terrified and took the app in the quickest time I could." He doesn't know whether the app is legit or not. It's 100% original code, according to the description, however it's likely that he reverse engineered a few things, because it's compatible with current servers and versions of the game.
To us, Wilkin sounds innocent enough. Wilkin claims he doesn't wish to hurt the brand, but he just wanted to offer an efficient tool. I'm hoping to find a solution that doesn't put anyone at risk. PREMIUM E We hope also -- having Minecraft running in a legal manner on iOS would be a nice benefit for iPhone owners and fans of the incredibly popular game.
