Minecraft Says 'No' To NFTs

Mojang Studios, the makers of the popular Minecraft game, is adopting a page from the traditional U.S. anti-drugs playbook, however it appears "Just Say No" works much better in blockchain-based money-making schemes than it did for the use of narcotics.

The Microsoft-owned studio posted on its blog on Wednesday that NFTs in Minecraft "are generally not something we would allow or support." The company also stated that it was revising its Minecraft Usage Guidelines to state that blockchain tech will not be allowed to be integrated into the Minecraft game client, and will not be used to create NFTs based on any in-game content, whether that's skins, things or even mods.

The developers wrote that blockchain technology's notions of digital ownership are based on "scarcity and exclusion" and "doesn't coincide with Minecraft values of inclusion, creativity and playing with others."

This actually happened. A NFT project called Blockverse that was believed to be built for the Minecraft universe, swindled an estimated $1.2 million from the early investors who bought Blockverse characters in NFT form on sites such as OpenSeas. The project also had a cryptocurrency called $Diamond. The creators of the project took all the money invested and wiped out the website, Discord and Twitter accounts. This is commonly known as a "rug pull" and is very common in crypto space.

While the Minecraft developers left the door open for blockchain technology to be added in the future however, they said they have no plans to introduce blockchain technology in Minecraft at the moment.

You can expect that those projects that were already trying to integrate Minecraft into the blockchain were not enthused by the news. NFT Worlds, a blockchain-based business that allows users to purchase NFTs from digital environments, mostly those found in Minecraft-were stung hard. The company posted an Discord message on its Twitter account declaring that they were trying to find solutions to the Minecraft EULA changes and that they were thinking of pivoting to create their Minecraft-like game platform.

In August 2021, data from Statista, Minecraft is still being played by 141 million people every month, despite the game being more than 13 years old. In a 2019 interview Helen Chiang, head of Minecraft studio, said that Minecraft players were on average 24 years old. But the game is specifically designed to be suitable for children, Chiang said. For Minecraft players who are aged 10 or older, the ERSB rating is for 10 years old and over. A plan to make money by investing into the client raises a number of warnings. This is especially true when it exposes children to abuse. Edge was said to have been instructed by Chiang that "We should be very precise and straightforward about how we plan on making money from the game."

While other games that are specifically designed for kids like Roblox have been focusing on monetization and in-game promotional opportunities targeted at children. Roblux is used to incentivize players to spend Roblux in-game on items, while they play in worlds specifically designed to promote brands like Ralph Lauren, Nike, and Vans. The game's creators revised their community standards in the past year to include an unclear reference to NFTs in-game. Users, they said, are not permitted to use Roblox to offer payment for acting as an asset model.
