Native Minecraft Servers with GraalVM Native Image

The Minecraft server is known to use lots of memory and CPU resources and can be hard to install. This project makes it possible to compile the Minecraft server into an executable that is self-contained and independent with the help of GraalVM Native Image. This means it is supposed to require less memory and CPU resources, have faster start-up times, and be simpler and less expensive to deploy.

A native Minecraft server is smaller than 120MB, and with that significantly smaller than Minecraft's server.jar plus a JDK required to run it. With upx compression it is possible to reduce the size of the native executable could be reduced further to less than 40MB which is smaller than the server.jar. Initial tests also revealed a comparable run-time performance and a smaller footprint for memory. For best results, use GraalVM Enterprise Native Image, which has better performance and lower memory usage than the Community Edition, and try using the G1 GC and Profile-Guided Optimizations. The Oracle Cloud Free Tier not only provides four Ampere A1 cores and 24GB of RAM that is always free which is sufficient to host a Minecraft server and also provides access to GraalVM Enterprise.

Read this blog post for more information.

Disclaimer: This project is meant to be used for demonstration purposes only. It is intended to assist the Minecraft community evaluate the use of GraalVM Native Image. Use at your own risk.

1. Download GraalVM Community or Enterprise (GraalVM 22.2.0 or later is required). Optional: make sure that upx is on your $PATH to enable compression. 2. Visit the repository and download it. Then run build.sh. 3. INFO Launch the native Minecraft server with ./native-minecraft-server. The first time you run the server, you will have to follow the regular procedure of accepting Minecraft's EULA.

How It Works

This project is only the build.sh script and reachability metadata to build an native Minecraft server. The build.sh script downloads Minecraft's server.jar and then extracts jars as well as other resources from it. After that, it launches GraalVM Native Image using the right configuration to create an original version of the Minecraft server. In addition, and only if upx is located on the $PATH script, it will compress the native executable.

Limitations and issues that are known

The configuration currently is compatible with Minecraft 1.18.2. The server GUI is not yet supported. Mods are not currently supported. - There is no build script for Windows yet, however the WSL should work. Sometimes, the native executable fails to start. It is typically possible to restart it multiple times. Error: com.mojang.datafixers.types.templates.List$ListType cannot be cast to java.lang.Comparable.
