The Five-Finger Test
Use the five-finger test to check if the reading level of your book is right for you:
Choose any page from the book to read.
Read the page aloud.
When you read a word you do not know or one you cannot pronounce, hold up a finger.
If you hold up five fingers by the end of the page, the book is too difficult to read without help.
The five-finger test suggests the following:
1–2 fingers: This book should be easy for you to understand on your own.
3 fingers: This book could be hard for you to understand at times.
4 fingers: This book will be difficult for you to understand without help.
5 fingers: This book will be too difficult to understand on your own. Choose another book.

Activity 2
Write one or two sentences about what it was like to listen carefully to the two texts. Tell why it was easy or hard for you to notice and compare details. In this lesson, you will improve sentences while keeping their meaning the same.
Key Word
wordiness – the use of more words than are needed to get across a meaning writing is not always easy. Authors may know what they want to say but have trouble explaining it in the right words. Many times, authors say more than they need to, which can make sentences confusing.
Several geese were honking on the lake this morning.
When reviewing your own work, look for examples of wordiness. You may have used more words than are needed. Be short and direct when stating ideas. Inserting extra words or phrases can distract from the main idea of a sentence. Get your meaning across to the reader with as few words as possible.

Look at the example below.

It is important to know that we will be meeting at Dan’s house.

In this sentence, the words it is important to know that are not needed because they do not add to the meaning of the sentence. The main idea of the sentence is simply “We will be meeting at Dan’s house.” The author can remove the first part of the sentence to more directly state the main idea.

Read the example sentence.

If it so happens that we win the game, we will celebrate.

Question 1

How can this sentence be reduced to state the main idea more directly?

Show Answer
The words it so happens that do not add to the meaning of the sentence, so they are not needed. The sentence is shorter and easier to understand without the extra words.

Read another example.

There were several geese that were honking on the lake this morning.

Sometimes sentences start with phrases like There were, There was, There is, It is, and It was. These sentences will often also include the word that, which should be removed as well. In the example above, There were and that can be removed so the sentence is shorter and more direct.

Question 2

How can you rewrite the sentence to state the main idea more directly?
