Minecraft

Anyone who has been paying attention to Minecraft knows that it's experiencing a rebound. We can now quantify this to a certain degree.

This week, Microsoft has told Business Insider that Minecraft has rocketed to 112 million monthly users, a 20 million increase since the last time they announced those figures in October , 2018. The game is more than a decade old, but is still relevant.

There are many explanations for the current popularity of Minecraft. A new update was released around the tenth anniversary and contained many more features. PewDiePie, the YouTuber with 100 million subscribers is the one who brought the game back to the "influencer" scene. His channel was devoted to Minecraft for the past few months. Then there's Fortnite's slow decline as players move on from the massive hit to other games, like Minecraft.

Minecraft's growth is even more impressive when you consider that it's not free on most platforms, including Fortnite. While some might credit Microsoft for incorporating it into the Xbox Game Pass to increase its playercount, others may not.

Fortnite appears to be aware that Minecraft is popular with players. This is the reason we have seen the birth and dedication to building Creative Mode in that game. Minecraft is still the first and will continue to increase its popularity with the release of new games like Minecraft Dungeons. This game combines the original with Diablo-like looting and dungeons.

All in all, the refrain I keep hearing from Minecraft players is that it's a game people like to return to after a while away In this instance, I think there's kind of a snowball effect that many players returned to the game together, it felt like old friends could all play all at once and have as much fun playing now as they did 3-8 years ago.

Although it may have seemed odd at the time, Microsoft's purchase of Minecraft for $2.5 billion was a smart decision. They now have one of the most played games in the world. I'm willing to wager that Minecraft has 112 million monthly players which is more than Fortnite currently. It may even be competing with mobile games at that scale. It's truly impressive.

Expect Minecraft to continue to exist for a long time. It will continue to be relevant with the next releases such as Minecraft Dungeons, Minecraft Earth and the AR play that will target Pokemon GO in the near future.
