Minecraft Says "No" To NFTs

Mojang Studios, the makers of the uber-popular Minecraft is adopting a gist from the traditional U.S. anti-drugs playbook, though it seems "Just Say No" works much better in blockchain-based money-making schemes than it ever did for narcotics.

The Microsoft-owned studio posted on its blog on Wednesday that NFTs in Minecraft "are generally not something we accept or support." The company stated that it was revising its Minecraft Usage Guidelines to clarify that blockchain tech will not be allowed to integrate into the Minecraft game client and cannot be used to create NFTs based on in-game content, whether that's skins or things, or even mods.



The developers of blockchain technology wrote that the perceptions of digital ownership are built on "scarcity, exclusion" and "doesn't coincide with Minecraft values of creative inclusion and playing with others."



This was actually what was actually happening. Blockverse is an NFT project that was supposedly created for Minecraft created an estimated $1.2million from investors who purchased Blockverse characters in NFT format on sites like OpenSeas. The project also had a cryptocurrency called $Diamond. The creators of the project seized all the invested money and shut down the website, Discord and Twitter accounts. This is commonly referred to as"rug pull" or "rug pull" and is very common in crypto space.



While the Minecraft developers left it open for blockchain tech to be added in the future but they also stated that they do not have plans to implement blockchain technology into Minecraft at the moment.

It is likely that the projects which were working to integrate Minecraft into blockchain technology were not as thrilled by the announcement. Minecraft NFT Worlds, a company that uses blockchain to allow users to purchase NFTs for their Minecraft, a digital world, was affected hard. The company issued a Discord message on its Twitter account saying that they were working to find solutions to the Minecraft EULA changes and were contemplating pivoting to create their Minecraft-like game platform.



Despite the game being almost 13 years old and 141 million active users remain on Minecraft every month, according to of August 2021 data from Statista. In a 2019 interview, Helen Chiang, head of Minecraft studio, revealed that Minecraft players were on average 24 years old. Chiang declared that the game was designed to be suitable for children. The ERSB rating for Minecraft players is 10-years-old and above. A money-making investment strategy built into the client raises plenty of warnings. This is especially the case when it exposes children to abuse. Edge was instructed by Chiang that "We must be precise and straightforward about the way we will be making money in the game."



Roblox is another game designed toward children, has taken on the idea of monetization as well as in-game promotions specifically designed for children. Roblux is used to incentivize users to spend Roblux in-game for items, while they visit environments specifically designed to promote brands such as Ralph Lauren, Nike, and Vans. The game's creators revised their community standards last year to make a vague reference to NFTs in game. Roblox users aren't allowed to use Roblox to pay for models or assets.
