Towcester Centre for Leisure

Towcester Town Council

The regeneration plans of Towcester Town Council and South Northamptonshire District Council will see the town centre regenerated with a new community library, improved leisure facilities and improved car parking. The plans also include the development of a new hotel and a number of additional shops in the Moat Lane area. A consultation is currently underway, which will close on 6 August. The outline planning application will then be considered by WNDC in September.

However, the proposed development poses a number of problems, not least of which is traffic. The development would adversely affect ancient woodland, wildlife sites and public footpaths. It would also increase the amount of traffic within Towcester, particularly on the A5 and Relief Road.

The town is the administrative headquarters of South Northamptonshire district council and is one of the country's oldest settlements. It was a Roman garrison town called Lactodurum. Today, the population is around 12,000 and is set to rise by a further 4,000 in the next few years. Facilities and services will be developed to cope with the growth in population.

The town has many sports facilities. The Towcester Racecourse, which was part of the Easton Neston estate, has hosted several national horse racing events. Towcester also has a greyhound track. In 2010, the town also hosted the World Hovercraft Championship. The town is also home to an Air Cadet squadron. The town is also just five miles from the Silverstone Circuit.
