Return To Player (RTP) and Hit Frequency: What do These Signify?

What does the terms "Return to Player" and "Hit Frequency" Mean?

RETURN TO the PLAYER (RTP).

Casinos make use of the term Return to Player to indicate the amount of money that a VLT (or slot machine) will return to the players. If you place 100 $1 bets on a machine with a RTP of 90%, you could be expecting to win around $90 in winnings. RTP and the house edge can be calculated over a long period of time. There is a lot that can occur in the short term (see Short Term Volatility versus Long Term Predictability) So, it is important to only bet on funds that you are willing to lose.

You may have already noticed that RTP is really the opposite of house advantage. If a machine has a 20 percentage advantage in house value, the average RTP will be about 80 percent, which means that, over the course of time, the machine will take around 20% of the money bet and pay the remainder to the players who win.

Hit Frequency

Hit frequency is the name used by casinos to explain the frequency with which machines stop when it has the winning combination. If Winslots.org has an average hit frequency of 8.8 which means it will stop once it hits the winning combination about 88% of the time. Not to be overlooked, some VLTs and slot machines allow players the ability to wager on multiple lines at once. It means that players may win one or several winning combinations as well as many losing combinations in one spin. Although it could appear as if players are winning more often than normal, the number of losing combinations over time will be more.

The hit rate of VLTs and slot machines can differ significantly. While some slots may have a hit rate of 3%, others, like video poker, could have a hit rate of nearly 45%. Although the high frequency of hits in video poker might sound appealing, keep in mind that nearly 50% of the "hits" are just a return on his original bet. While a machine with a 3 percent hit frequency might not be appealing, it's likely to offer players the chance of winning a huge jackpot. (Machines that offer large, progressive jackpots tend to be less frequent in hitting and higher jackpots.)

Low hit frequency games are frequently viewed as tight by players because of the few wins. High hit frequency games are often viewed as loose because there are very few wins.

Remember "hit frequency" is the frequency at which (on average) one winning combination can be found. "Return to player" is the amount or how much of the money wagered that a machine will bring back over time.
