當出現嚴重的牙周病症狀時，通常治療效果都會比較不理想或是仍然需要拔除患齒；患者也可能因缺牙，會需要額外的預算來做植牙或其它牙齒重建功能。 若有這類情況，首重改善口腔衛生，確實刷牙以及用牙線或牙間刷清潔牙縫，半年定期至牙科檢查。 若內科不建議停藥換藥，則必要時進行第一階段全口牙周治療或牙周手術。
演算不能用牙刷被除去; 只有牙科專業人士可以在口腔清潔時將其刪除。 為了保持菌斑和牙石得到控制，這是必不可少的，每天刷牙兩次，用牙線每天至少一次，看你的牙科專業定期清洗。 陳映瑜醫師提醒，要預防牙周病復發，除了定期回診洗牙，並接受全口X光檢查，民眾每天一定要做好刷牙清潔工作。
