Minecraft has definitely gotten popular in the last decade or so since it was released in 2009/2010 - it's been one of the most popular games in history in terms of sales and perhaps in terms of its influence.
Despite this, I feel that the latest versions don't have the same vibe as the older versions (Beta 1.7.3 or older). They're both amazing, not going to be honest. However, I think they are two completely different products that cannot be comparably.
Modern Minecraft versions feel more like RPGs to me, which negates some of the loneliness the Alpha and Beta versions left you feeling. There's not as much to do in the older versions - you have to get creative to have fun! In the newer versions though, there seems (could be wrong though) to be a few set tasks that you have to do (like collect food for the constantly-decreasing hunger bar), so you'd usually always have something to do because the game's told you that you have to do it (if that makes any sense)!
My Experience
I play NSSS, ClassiCube, or AlphaPlace most of the time.
ClassiCube
ClassiCube is an open-source reimagining of Minecraft Classic 0.30 developed for modern-day use written in C and accessible on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, browser and even Android (although it's still in beta). It's possible to launch the game in Singleplayer mode and you'll be able to view a 0.30-style map that includes 0.30 style menus and 0.30 style blocks (same textures, block behaviours). This is basically 0.30 updated for modern operating environments (and without having to rely on old versions of Java) and comes with a brand new level format and significantly improved performance.
However, the fun really begins when you venture into the SMP (multiplayer) mode. Some servers are 0.30 nostalga servers. However, many servers use the new Classic+Hax or Enhanced gamemodes. Californiacruisers These modes provide a variety of features that improve the quality of life such as flight, noclip and custom blocks.
