Your brand new Xbox Live account gives you access to a variety of settings to let you, as well as your family, play as you like online. You can manage all of your settings at account.xbox.com/settings but here's a rundown of the most important ones:
"JOIN MULTIPLAYER GAMES" SETTINGS
If you have your settings set to block joining multiplayer games, you can't play multiplayer games on Minecraft including shared local worlds, Realms or servers. To enable multiplayer in Minecraft make sure that this setting is set to 'Allow.'
"OTHERS can communicate via voice or TXT, as well as invites" SETTINGS
If you have your settings set to block communications from others, you will still be able to join and play in multiplayer experiences across Minecraft, but you won't receive chat messages from other players or receive invites to join other players' games.
Children's Accounts - UNDER 13S
You must have parental consent to sign up for an Xbox Live account if you are younger than 13 years old. Parents can add a child account at https://account.microsoft.com/family/addmember.
By default every child account has their multiplayer and communication settings disabled. This means that children's accounts cannot play on other players in their worlds, Realms, servers, or interact with other players online until their parents log in and change the settings to enable multiplayer.

GENERAL TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE ONLINE IN MINECRAFT

Do not share your Xbox Live Account PASSWORD
Your account is not just your personal information, but also if you have a Realm or have made a purchase on the marketplace, it also is the record of your online purchases made in Minecraft. You should never give out your password or share your Xbox Live account.
