World of Warcraft Developers Weigh The Mobile Gaming App

World of Warcraft developers weigh the mobile gaming app

21 March 2012

World of Warcraft's developers have confirmed that they're considering porting the game to mobile devices.

Eurogamer interviewed Blizzard Entertainment about the link between a decline in subscribers and the launch of a Star Wars-themed rival title.

In November, the firm announced that WoW had 10.3 Million subscribers which was down from 12 million in 2010.

While others have attempted to make WoW compatible with Android devices, an official launch could boost Blizzard's earnings.

So far, the company has only released a no-cost Mobile Armoury app to allow players to keep their character's progress and plan their adventures.

Eurogamer was informed by John Lagrave, a senior producer at the company that the primary reason why his team didn't have a mobile game that allowed gameplay was due to the difficulties in shrinking the interface.

"Maybe we'll stumble on the best way to put WoW on the phone. Maybe we will not, but we're definitely investigating it,"he told the website.

"The world is evolving towards that little handheld device... It would be foolish of any game designer to not be looking at this, and we are not. We don't believe we're stupid."

Competition

Mr Lagrave also indicated that the number paying fees has continued to "dip", since the last time the figures were announced.

Bioware and Lucasarts' Star Wars: The Old Republic was launched in December. It offers an alternative to the massively multiplayer online (MMO) experience.

Frank Gibeau, president of the labels of publisher Electronic Arts, told analysts in February that the title already had attracted over 1.7 million active subscribers with gamers' playing time averaging around four hours per day.

Blizzard started offering 20 free WoW level last year. Mr Lagrave said that the idea of an extension of the trial is "on the table".

He stated that he is expecting an increase in player numbers after the expansion pack is available. The Mists of Panderia update - the release date for which has not been revealed will let players explore a "lost continent" that is populated by pandas adept in martial arts.

The company has also announced that they have renegotiated its partnership with Neteasein China, ensuring that WoW will continue to be sold in China.

Solutions for streaming

While Blizzard ponders the possibility of a mobile WoW release, others are attempting to step into the breach.

Vancouver-based Gamestring announced that it was working to make the game available on Android-based devices in December 2010.

It showed an early "alpha-version" of an exploit that allows the game to run on an HTC phone by streaming data from its servers to a customized touchscreen interface.

Users have also posted videos to YouTube showing the game running on tablet computers using remote desktop applications.

However, such solutions introduce the issue of lag is more difficult to control than a PC.
