'Minecraft: Education Edition' It will Launch In Early Access

A new version of Minecraft developed for the classroom is now available in early access. Minecraft Education Edition was launched in January, as part of Microsoft's acquisition MinecraftEdu which is a group that has been developing the game for teachers. The new version will be available free of charge this summer, prior to a per student pricing model is introduced for academic year. As a small gesture of gratitude, Microsoft has promised existing MinecraftEdu customers a year of free access to Education Edition -- presumably that will begin after the trial for early access closes.



Education Edition has some advantages over the standard version of Minecraft. Right off the bat, up 30 students can be taught and collaborate in the same virtual world which eliminates the need to establish an account on a private server via an application such as Minecraft Realms. Minecraft Servers Teachers can create non-player characters (NPCs) to provide a more guided experience, and also equip them with web links so that students can access additional resources. There's also a chalkboard to provide instructions, as well as a camera that students can use to snap snapshots of their work, creating an in-game portfolio in the process.



Microsoft says it's still working on a host of other features that the public has demanded. These include a new interface that gives teachers a map (with markers for each student) as well as the ability to teleport users (should they begin to play around or wander off in a random way) and a chat window for managing both private and classroom-wide conversations. Minecraft has proven itself to be a useful education tool that teaches art, geology and coding. With an official version for school, its potential and successes are likely to increase.
