Default skins[]

In Java Edition pre-Classic Steve was first shown in a cyan shirt, blue pants and gray shoes. Steve was the initial face of the human mob. Later , in Java Edition Classic, Steve's appearance was changed to include no beard; despite this, Steve still maintained the beard on a variety of merchandise, marketing material, and official artwork.

Alex was introduced in Java Edition 1.1.8-pre1 and was the default skin model for slim arms.

In 2022, artwork and trailers for The Wild Update revealed Sunny, Noor, and Efe, though they went unnamed and weren't officially incorporated into the game at the time.

On August 20, 2022, Minecraft Now announced seven new default skins. The seven new default skins were revealed during Minecraft Live 2022, three of which were new characters from The Wild Update trailers. The names of the skins were announced in a Minecraft Live 2022 Recap article. The new skins were made available to players on the 20th of October, 2022. They can be accessed via the Skins tab in the launcher, or by using the character creator on the bedrock edition.

Properties[]

Skins are separated into areas that act as the surface area of the character (for instance the front head area, the left leg area, etc.). There are 3,264 pixels that can be used to customize, with 1,632 pixels per layer. The second layer can be used to provide the character glasses, hats or other accessories (even the head is bigger).

In Java Edition, skins can only be a solid color; transparency is not permitted on the skin file, unless it is on the second layer, which is transparent by default; playing offline, pixels could be left free resulting in "holes" in the skin. Transparent pixels on the first layer of a skin are uploaded. In-game, transparent pixels render as black pixels

Bedrock Edition skins can have twice the resolution of normal skins. This means that the template for the skin could be as large as 128x128 rather than 64x64. The same templates can be used as before, but the players have four times more pixels to work with since both dimensions were increased by a factor of four. Transparency is a possibility, even on the first layer, however it must have at minimum one visible pixel so a fully invisible skin cannot be created. The transparency should also be 0% or 100% since transparent colors are not permitted in either layer.

The size of the 2nd layer on the body legs, arms and the legs is 0.25 more than the skin pixel (inner layer). For the head 2nd layer (Hat layer) it is 0.5 pixels larger than the skin layer (inner layer).

World textures[]

A skin may also refer to other textures within the game, like blocks, item sprites mob skins, etc. A list of them can be found here.

It is worth noting that zombies and their variants can use normal player skins (and vice-versa). Skeleton mobs can use typical player skins as well however, keep in mind that they sport skinny legs and arms. If a skeleton mob's skin is used as a player's skin the arms and legs don't appear as skinny.

To prevent visual breakages in the texture, the skin of the participant must be aligned to the right position on the.png.

Changing or installing player skins[]

Java Edition[]

Only players who have purchased

Minecraft

You can modify the color of your skin on your character's skin color. This can be done via the profile page or the

Minecraft Launcher

Upload an original 64x64 pixels.png or an older texture. This will replace the default skin.

Skins can also be set to feature either 4 or 3 pixels wide arms. These options can be changed on the profile page. [1]

You can also alter the files client.jar steve.png or alex.png using the resource pack. However, the changes are only visible to players with the resource pack. They will affect all players with default skins.

Other versions of Steve and Alex in skin packs that have been released officially and other Minecraft media exist:

Bedrock Edition []

Pocket Edition v0.11.0 beta allows players to select between Steve or Alex default skins, and they can also apply their own skins. The Java edition is based on the same format. The player must select an acceptable skin image from their photo library and select one of the primary models. Players can also purchase Minecraft Coins to buy skin packs. The Legacy Skin Pack was also available in Bedrock Edition. However, players must sign up to Xbox Live in order to access all skins. It also includes five anonymous skins. Players can also create their own skin packs, which must include an manifest.json file, the skins.json file as well as all the desired skins. To display the names of skins, an additional.lang file can also be added to a directory with a labeled text. However, the game can register skins without it.

Creator of characters

The character creator menu.

The character creator is a feature of Bedrock Edition (and was in Minecraft Earth until discontinuation) that lets players customize their skins using free and paid-for cosmetic items. It is accessible by clicking the profile button on the main menu. It can also be used to equip capes. Many clothes cost Minecoins (Tokens on PlayStation 4), or can be earned through completing certain achievements.

Skin packs[]

As content that can be downloaded, Skin Packs are also available in Bedrock Edition. They can be purchased:

- Through the Marketplace. Most of them cost Minecoins (Tokens on PS4), but some have been released for free. - through .mcskin files put in the skin_packs or development_skin_packs folder in the game files (accessible only on Windows 10, Android, iOS, iPadOS, and Fire devices).

Java Edition Skin Packs[]

The skin packs that follow were made available on minecraft.net by Mojang Studios for certain events.

There could be additional Java Edition exclusive skin packs released by Mojang Studios not yet listed in this table.

Templates[]

Many players like their personal skin. While a variety of pre-made skins can be found on the internet, a lot of players prefer to design their own.

A custom skin can be used to customize the player's appearance and can be done either by using various community-created skin editors or by editing the steve.png or alex.png file manually with an image editor like Photoshop, GIMP, Paint.net or similar image editors. You can download the steve.png and alex.png files here. If you edit the steve.png or alex.png file by hand, make certain to keep the original dimensions of the image and make the background of the skin (the unused pixels) completely transparent. If not, Minecraft may not recognize the skin as it was intended.

Some people prefer to use a program that is either downloadable or in browser. This allows them to view their character in an animated model while editing the skin. For instance, software can help users by offering an array of pre-made options (such as hats, boots, sweaters, etc. ) and allowing the skin creator the exact look they desire, even in the event that the creator has any artistic ability.

After creating a custom skin through an editor for skins or editing the steve.png file directly, it is still necessary to upload the .png file to the Skin section of the Profile page on Minecraft.net (found here) before the skin is put on. Other players playing multiplayer will also be able to see the skin. Players cannot see the custom skin if they're not online or logged in.

The current templates can be used with older (pre-Java Edition 1.8) skins on the skin server, but only the top portion of the image is used. (i.e. it is not the individual arms and legs on the bottom and there is no overlay on any layer other than the head). The Java Edition 1.7 skin should be used exactly as it is.
