Minecraft Developers Won't Allow NFTs on The Gaming Platform

Minecraft does not permit tokens that are not fungible (NFTs) to be used on the game platform, with the company describing them as antithetical to Minecraft's "values of inclusion and creativity as well as playing with others".

NFTs provide ownership to a unique digital item, typically an image or video, with the ownership recorded on a decentralised digital register , also known as a blockchain.

Digital files can typically be copied or deleted for free, however an NFT can identify the owner of the original file for purposes of buying, selling or trading ownership of the file - typically for cryptocurrency.

The hype surrounding NFTs resulted in a surge in sales peaking at US$12bn (AU$17.4bn) globally in January. Sales dropped to a 12-month low in June due to the slump in cryptocurrency.

Minecraft which allows players to build entire virtual worlds, is highly customisable. Over the more than 10 years the game has been around, it has created an extensive community of users who create skins, mods and maps for the game.

NFTs were able to see Minecraft as a promising market with an estimated number of users in excess of 141,000,000 by August 2021. They are already sharing digital objects created for the game.

However, the Microsoft-owned development studio behind Minecraft, Mojang, has ended speculation NFTs could be allowed in the game. The developers have stated that blockchain technology was not permitted in Minecraft, stating that it was against Minecraft's core values.

"Each of these uses of NFTs and other blockchain technologies creates digital ownership that is based on scarcity and exclusion which is not in line with Minecraft values of creative inclusion and playing together," the company said.

"NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and create a picture of the haves and have-nots. Top minecraft servers The speculation about prices and investment mindset about NFTs take the focus away from playing the game and encourages profiteering, which we think is incompatible with the long-term joy and the success of our players."

Mojang claimed that the creations of Minecraft had intrinsic value , and there were instances where NFTs were sold at fraudulent or artificially exaggerated prices.

The studio expressed concern that third-party NFTs could not be reliable and could result in players losing their money. It also expressed concerns that a Minecraft implementation based entirely on blockchain technology could disappear without notice, which could result in players losing their investment.

This is referred to in crypto as the "rug pull", when developers behind a crypto project shut down the project and then make profit from the money. This appears to have already been the case with a third-party Minecraft project known as Blockverse. PC Gamer reported in January that the project was shut down after more than US$1m (AU$1.45m) was invested.

Mojang left the possibility of using "more secure" blockchain technology in Minecraft in the future , but said it had no plans to permit it at the moment.

One group working on integrating NFTs into Minecraft claimed that the move was a "step backwards in innovation" and should they be banned, they would need to pivot to another gaming platform.

Another hugely popular and customizable game, Roblox, which allows for in-game purchases of goods but hasn't yet announced a position on NFTs. Craig Donato, chief business officer of the company stated to VentureBeat that he did not think there was a reason why the game should not allow NFTs, and that it was just than a matter of when.

Other gaming companies such as Square Enix and Ubisoft are also exploring NFTs. Square Enix announced this week that players can purchase physical trading cards as well as digital versions of Final Fantasy VII for the 25th anniversary next year.
