MineCon 2011, the meatspace-focused convention for everything Minecraft will not begin until this Friday but that hasn't stopped some major announcements from coming out earlier. Minecraft: Pocket Edition made the move to the larger Android Marketplace in the last month following an extended period of exclusivity with the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play mobile phone. While they were certainly more appealing (and more squishy) landscapes, today's shift to the iPhone and iPad will provide a wider range of possibilities for the portable sandbox.
Released today on the New Zealand iTunes App Store as an Universal app, meaning that one purchase can be used on both iPhone and iPad hardware, Minecraft: Pocket Edition should be available in European and North American stores later today. That $9.99 NZD price should translate into PS4.99 / $6.99 when it's released, or the same as the Android Marketplace release.
