Minecraft Says no to NFTs because they Cause'scarcity And Exclusion'

Minecraft players Minecraft will not be able to purchase in-game content, such as worlds persona items, skins and other mods with NFTs.



Minecraft the most-loved video game of all time does not support NFTs because they "create an environment of haves and the have-nots".



Mojang Studios, a Minecraft developer, has stated yesterday (20 July) that NFTs would be against the game's fundamental values in a strongly written post on the Minecraft website.



The company stated that NFTs and other blockchain technologies create digital ownership based upon scarcity and exclusion. This is not in accordance with Minecraft values of creativity, inclusion, playing together, and sharing resources.



"The investment and speculative pricing mentality around NFTs diverts attention from the game and encourages profiteering, which we think is not in line with the long-term enjoyment and the success of our players."



Minecraft stated that the statement was in response to community members who wanted clarifications on Minecraft's position on NFTs and blockchain.



This means that Minecraft, unlike other virtual world games, will not allow blockchain integrations within its client or server applications. NFTs are not allowed to be used in-game to create content, such as skins, worlds, and other items, or other mods.



Mojang is a Microsoft-owned business, said it is also concerned about third-party NFTs. These NFTs may not be reliable and result in a cost to those who buy them. It also outlined scenarios in which third-party NFT managers could "disappear suddenly" or NFTs could "be sold at inflated or fraudulent prices".



"We recognise that creation inside our game has intrinsic value and we work hard to create a market in which those values are acknowledged."



Online gaming has seen a rise in interest in blockchain technologies such as NFTs. This topic was also discussed at Future Human earlier in the year.



Companies such as GameStop have expressed confidence in NFTs as an important aspect of the future of gaming, and has launched its own NFT marketplace.



Some companies aren't all-in. EA's CEO previously said blockchain and NFTs could represent the future of gaming, however, he added: "Right now, it's not something we're fighting for a long time".
