Makeup vlogger and influencer James Charles has had his YouTube channel removed from monetization due to a sexting scandal.
YouTube confirmed to the news website Insider that Charles was removed - albeit temporarily - from the Partner Program, which allows creators to monetize their channels directly on the platform. The YouTube-owned video site has reportedly invoked its "creator responsibility policy", which says that creators could be penalized for, among other behaviors, "[p]articipating in abuse or violence, displaying brutality, or engaging in deceitful or fraudulent behavior that causes real world harm".
Mashable has reached out to YouTube to get clarification on the extent and duration of Charles the suspension. Mashable has also called Charles representatives for comments.
Charles who is 21 years old, has been the subject of accusations by a variety of people over the past few years as well as two 16-year-olds who exchanged direct messages with Charles that were sexual in nature. In an apology video, titled "holding me accountable", Charles claimed that the messages were genuine and that he was misled to believe that the boys were 18. (While it's not clear which specific individuals he's referring to, a former accuser who claimed to Insider that he is 16 denied ever asserting to be 18 in his conversations with Charles.)
Some of the accusations date back to the year 2019 which was the year that Charles' friend and fellow beauty YouTuber Tati Westbrook publicly severed his ties with him in a infamous video called "BYE SISTER". In addition to personal grievances, Westbrook also spoke of numerous instances in which Charles allegedly tried "manipulating" men and described some as "emerging into adulthood". Other members of the "beauTubecommunity also posted videos of Charles talking about how to befriend straight men.
Charles' most recent statement on the allegations against him was posted to his Twitter account on Saturday, in which he said that while he "took responsibility" for his messages to teenagers, "many other people have come forward with a number of misleading stories and false accusations" in the aftermath of his apology video.

Charles is only the latest YouTube celebrity to be removed from the Partner Program over real-world allegations. David Dobrik, the central persona of the massively popular Vlog Squad, had his channel removed from monetization last month due to allegations of misconduct and assault against members of the collective, alleged to have happened during VS production shoots.
