Makeup vlogger and influencer James Charles has had his YouTube channel demonetized amid an alleged sexting scandal.
YouTube confirmed to the news website Insider that Charles has been removed, though temporarily, from the Partner Program, which allows creators to monetize their channels directly through the platform. According to reports, the Google-owned video site has invoked its "creator accountability policy" which stipulates that creators can be punished for engaging in violence or abuse, demonstrating brutality, or engaging in fraudulent/deceptive behaviour leading to harm in the real world.
Mashable has reached out to YouTube to get clarification on the length and nature of Charles' suspension. Sexting.ink Mashable has also called Charles' representatives for comment.
Charles 21 years old was the subject of numerous allegations from a variety of people over the past few years. This included two 16-year-olds who had direct messages with Charles that were sexually explicit. In an apology video, titled "holding me accountable", Charles claimed that these messages were authentic and claimed that he was deceived into believing that the boys were 18. (While it's not clear who he's referring to, a previous accuser who claimed to Insider that he was 16 denied ever claiming to be 18 in his conversations with Charles.)
Some of the allegations can be dating back to the year 2019, when Charles his friend, and fellow beauty YouTuber TatiWestbrook, has publicly sever his ties with him in a well-known video titled "BYE SISTER". As well as personal grievances, Westbrook also alluded to multiple instances where Charles had allegedly tried to "manipulate" men by describing them as "emerging into adulthood" In the wake of the video, other followers and members of the broader "beauTube" community posted videos of Charles discussing hitting on straight men.
Charles' latest statement regarding the accusations against him was posted to his twitter account on Saturday. He stated that while he "took responsibility" for his messages to teens, "many other people have come forward with a series of false and misleading stories" in the wake his apology video.
Charles is the latest YouTube celebrity to be removed from the Partner Program due to real-world allegations. David Dobrik, the key person in the wildly popular Vlog Squad, was demonetized last month due to accusations of misconduct and assault against other members of the collective. These incidents are alleged to have occurred during VS production shoots.
