Minecraft and Microsoft: What now? Mark Ward Technology correspondent, BBC News
If you're interested in understanding why Minecraft-maker Mojang is being bought by Microsoft you can play the game.
The single-player game is about one person who survives in harsh surroundings with only their imagination. Their survival is contingent on them constructing a house and fighting monsters with only tools and weapons they make with their hands.
It would be easy to think of this as a metaphor for Markus "Notch" the game's creator If computer games were subjected to the same analysis as novels. In the past, he's talked about his childhood and how he was "relatively poor" and his capacity to create his own entertainment, as well as whether he will need to defeat the same "demonsthat plagued his father.
Friends, family and the popularity of the things Notch created with his hands helped him prosper in the harsh world of today But the success has brought some challenges. These are harder to conquer.
At Minecon 2012, Notch was unable to walk more than just a few steps before being grabbed again by another fan eager to shake his hand and take a photo of him, or even sign their foam sword.
People power
He was never content with his transformation from a humble programmer who was responsible for his own code to a leading member of an international movement. The reason he gave for why he's going to leave Mojang"it's about my sanity," he said "it's about my sanity" - reaffirms the importance of sanity.
He knows that Minecraft is now about overseeing a community - much, much more than it is about maintaining and creating an application code base.
Microsoft might face a problem here.
With Xbox Live and its other cloud services there is no doubt that it has the experience of running a massive computer infrastructure that is serving millions of paying customers. This is crucial when it is able to run the behind-the scenes systems that keep Minecraft running.
Microsoft will alienate this community in the event that they don't understand how personal the game is, not just for Notch but for all the other players who play it. It's where they get to meet their friends and make new ones, where they express themselves, where they show off their technical and creative skills, where they find themselves.
I've seen it with my kids, who play it in different ways. One is a big fan of modified versions that involve arena battles or capture-the-flag-type competitions. The other builds intricate homes around swooping minecart tracks. He sometimes constructs treehouses that cover entire forests. They also often go on adventures with their friends in search of treasure, avoiding creepers and battling zombies, spiders and Skeletons.
This is possible because Minecraft allows the player to be open and free. Millions of people like them can play it. Feah It is possible to alter the game according to their preferences due to its flexibility. It accomplishes this by offering players a level of accessibility that Microsoft in its business software, has not embraced. This is the reason Microsoft has not been able to satisfy the millions of Minecraft players. The players don't want Microsoft to limit their freedom to modify and create the game to suit their needs. They have a deep-rooted belief in the things they create in the game.
There's no doubt that will be a tricky job for Microsoft to achieve considering how crucial that community can be.
It will need to combat the two biggest enemies of online gamers - downtime (aka delay) and lag. Microsoft will likely be held accountable for any issues that arise that arise from the game's future release regardless of whether or not it's their responsibility.
Making more drastic modifications to the operation of the game like limiting the ways that people can modify it, charging them for things that are currently free or restricting how they can tell the world about what they've done, could be handled badly, and make a large portion of that community against Microsoft.
This would be a horrible issue, given that the majority of its users are kids and will one day be gamers. Microsoft is trying to impress them with its Minecraft management. If it gets it wrong, it could end up becoming one of the monsters that people would like to fight and kill.
