I'd like pose a question to you, Shamus and your readers, what is Minecraft prior to 1.0/.8/9, an actual game?

Let me go over. IE was used on a computer to have fun. What was it that made it an application for gaming? The factor that makes games gaming, at the very the very least, in my opinion is that they have rules, goals and structures that add to core gameplay.

Terraria is a game that is similar to minecraft. It has bosses and loot, and an interesting and complex crafting system. It's more of an toy instead of a game. Toys are more imaginative and collaborative than games and they don't have the rules and objectives that make games, a game, a real game.

Let's look at some real-life games and toys.

Chess, a board game in which you try to outwit your opponent using superior strategies and then capture his King. Each unit plays according to the rules.

Lego is a toy that lets you build simple structures and express your imagination. Ayaka nihei Your goal is to create it by yourself.

DnD is a game in which you try to survive as long and make as much profit as possible while playing a character. What makes it a game is that it is structured by clearly defined rules that structure it's play. For instance, a d20 roll determines each action of the game.

Barbies and other play toys can be a means for a child to express their teenage fantasies about becoming an adult. There are no rules to define the actions or the general goal.

Football is a game where players try to move a ball along a line of scrimmage towards a goal located on the opposite side of the field. Each player is assigned a specific position with specific rules, and can be punished if they violate the rules.

My question about Minecraft is: What is the goal? With Minecraft 1.0 you can beat the dragon. But, before that, where are the real goals of the game beyond what you have set for yourself? Minecraft is more of a leisure device which the players make into a game. It is not an actual game. Go [direction] is an excellent illustration of this. It is the players trying to accomplish their goals as an toy, but without any fundamental gameplay mechanic.

While you can argue that this is a strength I'm seeking well-thought-out arguments as to why it's a good game. It doesn't matter whether it's good or bad. It's evident that it's a great toy.

Although it is possible to argue that Minecraft is a death-oriented game but it's not really that important because Minecraft isn't a game with the right gravitas that can be able to cover death in meaningful ways, beyond the fact that you're teleported. Even another similar genre game(pure Sandbox) The Sims, covered death in a manner that had more consequences. When you lost a Sim died it was lost to the Sim forever. The goal of your game was to attempt to keep the Sim alive, while having their needs being met as long as possible.

Edit: Damn thing was went live before I was done.

It is possible to argue that living as long as possible is the ultimate goal of the game My answer is that resources are plenty and tools are easy to come from, and the free resurrection is a very lax mechanic for death. It's almost absurd. The player is able to change the game into a peaceful state to avoid death at any time. Thus pointing again to the fact that this is a primarily user created system. This isn't a strictly controlled game structure.
