Microsoft Reveals 'Minecraft' Has Astonishing 112 Million Monthly Players

Minecraft
Anyone who has been paying attention to Minecraft knows that it's experiencing a rebound. But now we can quantify this to a certain degree.
This week, Microsoft has told Business Insider that Minecraft has risen to 112 million monthly gamers, a 20 million increase since the last time they announced those figures in October , 2018. This game is now more than a decade old, and more relevant than ever.
Other than "it's good and people like it" there are any number of reasons for the recent growth of Minecraft. A new update was released in the midst of the 10th anniversary of the game and added many more features. PewDiePie, the YouTuber with 100 million subscribers is credited with bringing the game back to the "influencer" scene. His channel was dedicated to Minecraft for the past few months. Fortnite's decline has been slow as players shift away from the megahit to other games, such as Minecraft.
Minecraft's growth is even more impressive when you consider that on the majority of platforms, it's not free, as is Fortnite. Although some may credit Microsoft for incorporating it into the Xbox Game Pass to increase its player count, others might not.
Fortnite appears to be aware that Minecraft is pulling away players and that's why we've seen the birth of Creative Mode in that game and continued devotion to expanding it. Minecraft is still the original and will only increase its popularity with future releases such as Minecraft Dungeons. This combines the original with Diablo-like looting, and dungeons.

All in all, I hear the same refrain from Minecraft players that it's a game people are eager to revisit after some time. In this instance it was an effect of snowballs where so many people played it at the same time that it felt like old friends could all join the game simultaneously and have the same fun now as they did 3-8 years ago.
Microsoft's $2.5 billion acquisition of Minecraft felt kind of odd at the time, but now they own one of the most played games in the world. I'm willing to bet that 112 million monthly players is more than Fortnite currently has and is possibly only competing with mobile titles at that scale. It's truly amazing.
Expect Minecraft to live for a long time, and continue to be relevant through upcoming releases like Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Earth an AR game that will take aim at Pokemon GO next.
