Yes the image above is an actual map created in Minecraft. It's a part of a vast, realistic terrain project that provides 16 square kilometers of diverse topography to build your own on. It's a stunning collection deserts mountains, swamps, and forests that you can download and use as a background for your own Minecraft constructions.
The map is called Kythor, and it was built by qwryzu over the course of around two months of work using World Machine and World Painter. "I deliberately made this map with huge open spaces to build," qwryzu explains. "Specifically, I made it with mods (shoutout to the Immersive Railroading gang). It's not the highest detailed map I've ever created, but I hope it will serve as an ideal backdrop for big constructions."
You can download the map for yourself on Planet Minecraft. It's available for Java Edition, and while it was built in 1.12.2, it should be compatible with any version currently in use however qwryzu isn't certain if the world height changes in 1.17 could cause issues.
