Take a look at some of the upcoming features in the Minecraft Caves and Cliffs 1.17 update prior to its official release.

The date for the release of Minecraft's 1.17 Caves and Cliffs update (opens in a new tab) is quickly approaching however for those who don't want to wait it out Mojang's Snapshots are an excellent way to test new features that are coming out before.

Minecraft Snapshots are publicly-released test builds that are unpolished with features of the upcoming updates available for players to try out. It's an opportunity for Mojang to test what features work within the game before making them permanent parts of the official update. Secure content Players can submit bugs and feedback to Mojang to improve the game.

Snapshots may contain any feature the studio wants to test, and can include new biomes, mobs, game mechanics, blocks and even new mobs. So far, Snapshots have a bunch of features from the Caves and Cliffs update which include glow squids (opens in new tab), cave generation (opens in a new tab) and the beautiful fauna and flora (opens in a new tab) that you'll encounter in the blocky caverns. If you're okay with some minor glitches in and out, Minecraft Snapshots are a great way to test out new features before the update's official release. Here's what you need to know in order to take a peek at the future of Minecraft.

Minecraft Snapshot installation How do I access beta builds

Snapshots are available on the Java edition of Minecraft, but there is an option to view early features on the Bedrock edition also. These are the Bedrock betas for Android, Xbox One and Windows 10, which are not identical to Snapshots but include many new features.

Mojang has made jumping into early versions of Minecraft quite easy So here's how to do it:

Snapshots of Minecraft: Java Edition:

- Open the Minecraft launcher. Select the 'Installations' tab

- In the top right corner, look for a box called Snapshots

- The latest Snapshot will appear at the end of the list of installed applications

Beta version of Minecraft: Bedrock Edition:

- Go to the Microsoft Store app on Windows 10

Look for the Xbox Insider App and download it.

Launch the app and then select "Insider Content" on the left

- Choose Minecraft and hit the join button

The app can take you to Minecraft's product page if you don't have a digital copy of the game.

If you're looking for Xbox One or Android instructions for Minecraft, visit Mojang's beta pages (opens in new tab) for further instructions. To stay up to date with the latest Snapshots and betas, bookmark the Minecraft forum's news page (opens in a new tab) that provides a list of all versions released.

Snapshots and betas are pretty unstable and the world you hop into might start to get a bit janky or even crash. It is best not to enter a world that you're not worried about getting corrupted. Also, it is best to keep your top Minecraft builds (opens in new tab) secure in a different universe.
