Elie had lost faith in god, and even in humanity as he experienced the work camps. Elie had a hard time keeping his faith alive when all of his family and friends were killed right before his eyes. "Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my god and my soul and turned my dreams to dust…" (pg 31) Elie didn’t know how God could let such a thing happen. God was silent. " I did not deny god's existence, but I doubted his absolute justice…" (pg 42) Elie had also lost faith in his family as they were separated during the selection once they reached the camps .
After being dehumanized, and surviving miraculously day to day, Elie had to not only worry about his own survival but his fathers as well. Elie debating id he take part of the fast, on Yom Kippur. Elie hoping for the slightest evidence of god to save him and the rest of the Jewish population from extinction. (chp 5)
