Roblox Malware Accounts for 9.6 Percent of Gaming-related Cyberthreats

According to a report by Kaspersky's SecureList, Roblox malware is responsible for 9.6 percent of all gaming-related cyberthreats. This is based on the amount of related to malicious or unwelcomed files. The platform is only trailed by Minecraft and FIFA in the number of threats, which account for 25.2% and 11.7 percent of such threats respectively.

Kaspersky is a renowned cybersecurity company that makes use of AI-driven technology to guard against hackers and viruses. Kaspersky developed the gaming-related cyberthreats report to warn gamers about the latest cyber-attacks. It also offers information on the most dangerous and widespread malware that they could encounter.

The study examined threats and statistics related to miner attacks on cryptocurrency and game cheating threats and data thieves. Kaspersky has created an inventory of the 28 most popular games that were or would soon be available on Origin and Steam as well as tiles that are platform independent to identify the most dangerous threats. Alongside Roblox The list includes Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto, Need for Speed, Call of Duty, FIFA, the CS:GO game, and PlayerUnknown's BattleGrounds (PUBG).

The security firm discovered that the top five PC games that were used as security threats between July 1, 2021, until June 30, 2022, were Minecraft, Roblox, Need for Speed, Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty. The most popular mobile games played during the same time period included Minecraft, Roblox, Grand Theft Auto, PUBG and FIFA.

The company reviewed 91,984 file during that period that included malware and potentially unwanted programs that were distributed using the popular games listed as a way to attract 384,224 players. list It ranked Roblox as the third most popular threat vector by the number of malicious or unwanted files (8,903) and the second based on the number of affected users (38,838) which is less than Minecraft (131,005).

Kaspersky's report reveals that multiplayer gaming platforms may represent a greater threat than other games, particularly pointing towards Minecraft and Roblox as two examples.

The report states that "Worryingly" the main target of these games is teens and children, who have no experience in cybersecurity. "Because of this, we think that they are a prime to be the next victim of cybercriminals. This implies that cybersecurity hygiene education for children should be given special attention."

The company also notes that malware and unwanted software distributed as cheats posed significant risks, especially for players with a specialised desire for a particular game series.

The report states that players frequently download malware on their devices that steals sensitive information, when they try to download popular games from third-grade websites instead of purchasing them on the official site.

They are usually "cracked" versions of popular games that players attempt to download illegally and then play for free, instead of paying retail price. However, some people make the mistake of downloading malicious versions of games simply by clicking on links to websites that appear to be legitimate websites.

Kaspersky offers several tips for gamers to protect themselves from malware, hacking attacks and phishing. To ensure authenticity, Kaspersky suggests setting up two-factor authentication on all accounts by using strong passwords and double-checking URLs for downloads. Kaspersky suggests you avoid the use of cracked software and content such as cheats.
