Therapeutic Massage

Terrie Yardley-Nohr, LMT, has been a massage therapist for 18 years, working both in private practice and medical settings. She began teaching massage techniques and ethics 13 years ago and became program manager at Anthem College in St. Louis, Missouri, 10 years ago. She is the author of Ethics for Massage Therapists (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2006). Your health history form should include a paragraph that indicates that the client has disclosed all known health information. If a client chooses not to disclose, a therapist could perform a treatment that may put the client’s health at risk. Although this paragraph can help a client know the importance of disclosure, many therapists need to work beyond this written caveat and help clients understand why the health information is so important for their treatment and care.

Klein goes on to describe how Crandall, through extensive interviewing of the NICU nurses, was able to elicit and organize previously tacit patterns of cues. Many of the cues were not previously recorded in the medical literature, and many were contradictory to adult cues of infection. The nurses were found to unconsciously react to complex patterns of subtle cues occurring together rather than to simple cues. Crandall was later able to create training materials focused on the cues, and importantly, presented in their original stories so that the less-experienced nurses could see how the cues appeared in context. Support the enhancement of health equity and access to care in marginalized populations.
Guidelines are developed to be disseminated and implemented taking into account their target audiences. They should also be disseminated in such a way that practitioners and consumers become aware of them and use them. In a coordinated effort with the Association of Medical Education in Europe , a number of papers have been published both in the journal Medical Teacher and as AMEE guides. In particular, Harden introduced concepts of outcome-based education and Shumway and Harden introduced assessment of outcomes. A patient with a newly-diagnosed case of fibromyalgia wonders whether massage will be beneficial and whether there is any risk of massage making the pain worse.
As with Crandall’s research, eliciting such patterns and tacit knowledge will be important to a guidelines creation process. Identify educational approaches from other disciplines applicable to the field of therapeutic massage and bodywork. Examine the impact of therapeutic massage and bodywork on worker satisfaction, mental health, and satisfaction at home. Advance understanding of the mechanisms through which therapeutic massage and bodywork affect health, resiliency, healing, and well-being.

Simply put, “best practice guidelines” are the collection, representation, and communication of current approaches and methods that have yielded positive patient/client outcomes. They are educational and informative for members of the profession and for the public and other health care providers. A central feature of the proposal is the use of a “World Café” symposium to elicit knowledge and solutions from diverse experts. The symposium would be aimed at vetting and refining the proposed guideline process by applying it to creation of guidelines for massage interventions for stress management, low back pain, and lymphedema. Before the symposium, participants would be informed of the symposium goals and process and on available research pertinent to the guidelines being considered. After the symposium, tasks to be carried out would include transcription of recordings, concept mapping, elicited-knowledge synthesis, and circulating the synthesis and background documentation.
The use of stories to effectively elicit tacit information and to further communicate such information is also supported by Klein and by the studies and observations of Brown on technical repair sociology. In particular, the World Café is a structured method for engaging experts in the type of problem-oriented dialog and story creation discussed by Brown. Kristi has a background in competitive swimming, coaching, lifeguarding, and water aerobics. As a reflection of her well-rounded and fitness-based lifestyle, she holds a certificate to teach group exercise classes and is currently enrolled in a personal training course.

Myofascial Release - Table work, involving the stretching and elongating of connective tissue in and around the muscles. Helps to restore balance, health, and elasticity while relieving pain. Trigger Point Therapy - Table work that uses methods to assess and manipulate muscle tissue, in order to promote the healing and reprogramming of the neurological loop to reduce pain and improve functionality.
Deep Tissue Massage - Table work, involving deeper pressure (to client’s tolerance level). A criminal record may affect a graduate’s ability to take the licensure examination or obtain state licensure. A majority of the states require a license to practice massage therapy.
Deep tissue works using targeted pressure to deeply access muscles and the fascial layers, beneficial for anyone who experiences chronic pain, tension, or spams. Heated smooth stones are used and placed on certain points on the body to warm and assist in loosening tight muscles and fascia. A facial massage will increase circulation to your scalp, facial tissue, and neck resulting in brighter, youthful-looking skin.

Clients will experience deep relaxation and a mind-body balance as the body is put into a state of healing as the muscles, joints and fascia are carefully manipulated to support a strong, healthy body. Writing from a chiropractic perspective, Mootz and Hansen discussed the use and understanding of what they term “clinical algorithms”. Mootz and Hansen’s use of algorithm as a graphical format would more generally be taken as the presentation of an algorithm as a graphical flowchart.

By combining all three disciplines, students assimilate knowledge of structure, function, and dysfunction in a single learning environment. The application of these concepts to the practice of massage, as well as the effects of massage, are emphasized. Students also learn and use anatomical terminology, health and wellness concepts, and assessment tools. Occurring in parallel with government agency efforts on clinical guidelines, other efforts have been directed toward defining outcome-based competencies for health care. These efforts have resulted in a number of publications and guides. Recognizing that medicine is taking on a global face, the Institute for International Medical Education has developed a body of work on Global Minimum Essential Requirements.
In September 2005, FSMTB held its formative meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico, prior to the annual American Massage Therapy Association convention. The meeting was attended by 22 states and the District of Columbia. During this landmark event, bylaws were unanimously adopted and the first formal board was elected. Her approaches are focused on helping to alleviate physical pain, emotional stress, and mental distress. Help us get the word out by sharing with colleagues, medical professionals, students, and friends. Humans crave and seek out opportunities for social connection with like minded people. People seeking out massage are often experiencing a physical or emotional need and receive a boost of feel good and social connectedness hormones from the therapeutic touch received during bodywork. Society at large has experienced first hand the impact that a lack of community and physical touch has had on our mental and emotional wellbeing. Sharing the benefits of massage can help clients understand the important role it can play in their health and well-being.

Cannady added massage therapy can be a coping mechanism for elderly patients living alone. After she took the course, she realized the benefits it would provide not only for her clients, but herself too. She opened her studio Down to Earth with Ramsie in October at 5 N. Lafayette St. and is looking forward to bonding with community members in and outside Uptown Shelby. Reiki - Table work, that uses a system of treatment that channels universal healing energy through the therapist into and around the client’s body, sometimes without direct hands-on contact.
Massage Theory & Practical Application
Challenges in creating guidelines for massage therapy are discussed. Current literature from the wider scope of health care is extensively reviewed. Topics addressed include guideline creation, credentialing of complementary and alternative medicine practitioners, definition of competence, and the increasing role of technology in managing training and task-necessary competencies. Finally, a process for creation of massage therapy guidelines is proposed. The role of transparency and broad and open peer review is emphasized as essential to the usability and credibility of guidelines.
