Minecraft XBLA was Profitable within an Hour, Broke Digital Sale Records

Minecraft is digging its own grave with its latest release on XBLA -- and by "grave" we refer to "lavish gold-plated throne room with an indoor pool as well as grape-feeding robots." Today's tweet by Markus "Notch", Markus Persson, a Minecraft developer, claimed that Minecraft was profitable within one hour of its launch through XBLA. This is in addition to the multimillion-dollar version for PC that Notch has developed.

Based on leaderboard participation rates, Minecraft sold more than 400 000 copies in just 24 hours, Notch said. According to Microsoft, Minecraft sold more digital copies than any other XBLA game on its first day of release and broke records for digital sales.



Today, Notch tweeted that he had sales numbers for Minecraft (turns out they were the above leaderboard figures), which sparked a conversation about the internal workings of XBLA developer contracts with Fez's Polytron. Polytron doesn't yet know Fez's exact sales figures despite the fact that they were published a month ago.



"Standard procedure" according to Polytron is "you discover the amount you've sold when you receive your first check three to four months after." Notch believed that getting the numbers immediately was normal, but he avoided contract negotiations and doesn't know what it says on the subject, he said.



Polytron wrote that Minecraft also gets free updates. "This is something every other developer on this platform is told is simply impossible." Notch responded: "We had fought for this, but we only got a small number of them. I'm not sure why they don’t like it."



We might have discovered Notch's secret talent and secret to his success: fighting a contract, avoiding negotiation and winning.



MINECRAFT: XBOX 360 EDITION BREAKS DIGITAL SALES RECORDS Microsoft Studios Presents: Arcade NEXT program delivers two back-to-back record-breaking titles in four weeks



Microsoft today announced that Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition Mojang's console version the immensely popular PC game, which has broken previous records for digital sales. It was the most popular game sold by any other game within the first 24 hours of its release on Xbox LIVE Arcade.



This comes on the heels of Trials Evolution, which similarly reduced revenue numbers on its first day of sales. It was the first game of the "Arcade NEXT" program.



Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was created by 4J Studios and Mojang in collaboration with Microsoft Studios. It introduces new gaming experiences such as an exclusive crafting menu as well as tutorials for games. Split-screen multiplayer and online multiplayer for up eight players over Xbox LIVE are also available.



Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is available on Xbox LIVE Arcade for 1600 Microsoft Points, and is the final game of the "Microsoft Studios Presents: Arcade NEXT" lineup, with also included Trials Evolution (Redlynx), Bloodforge (Climax) and Fable Heroes (Lionhead).
