Growing Plants in Minecraft
Farmland
Many varieties of plants require Farmland to grow on. Farmland is created by working on dirt or grass blocks using hoes. Farmland is similar to dirt , but the blocks aren't as tall.
Farmland left unplanted for too long or is jumped upon (by mobs, players), will revert back to dirt.
Irrigation
Farmland within 4 blocks will be irrigationally or "hydrated" in the event that it is surrounded by water. Most crops are better off when the land is irrigated and dry.
Lighting
Light is essential for most plants to grow. If you plant them outdoors they will be growing during the day, but when you add more light they will grow at night as well.
Indoors or underground, crops will only grow when you provide artificial lighting for them.
Bone Meal
Bone Meal can be fertilised to boost the growth of various crops. Bone Meal is made from skeleton bones, and when you click to apply it to your crop there is a chance of it growing.
Wheat
Wheat is the most popular crop you can grow.
Seeds
First, you will need
Seeds
They can be obtained by breaking up blocks of long grass. You'll also get more seeds when you harvest your wheat, which means you only require a handful to begin with.
Planting your first crop
First, make a hoe.
...and ensure that you add water. Plant your seeds and then wait for them to develop. To ensure that your crops are growing at night, put an illuminated area near them so that they are ready to harvest earlier.
This is how your first wheat farm will appear.
If you find bones, you can make Bone Meal and fertilise your crops. Two applications is usually enough to fully mature your wheat. If your wheat isn't fully ripe, then you need to wait.
It's ready when it's golden:
You will receive the wheat item which can be used to feed cows or sheep and also more seeds after you harvest your wheat. You'll be able to establish an even bigger farm the next time.
Larger fields
One block of water will irrigate 80 blocks of agricultural land:
TIP:place an lily pad on the water to keep you from falling into the water when you harvest or replant your wheat.
TIP: You can harvest wheat faster by pouring water over your field. Replanting, however, must be done block-by-block.
Melons and pumpkins
Melons are a useful food source, and can be used to make potions. Although pumpkins aren't edible however, they can be used as helmets to defend against Endermen. You can also create Jack-o-Lanterns out of pumpkins. This decorative lighting fixture is used to create snow golems.
Seeds
Both pumpkin seeds and melon can be found in abandoned mine shafts and dungeons. Sometimes, pumpkins can be found in the wild, while melon seeds might be available from NPC villager.
Melon seeds and pumpkin seeds can be made using pieces of melon and pumpkins.
Planting
Seeds must be planted on
Farmland
You should water them regularly. They will then grow into a pumpkin or melon plant, which takes between 10 and 30 minutes to do so. When the plant is mature the pumpkin or melon will appear on the dirt, farmland or grass block in front of the plant.
Apply bonemeal to speed up the growth of your plant. - while the seed must be planted on farmland, the fruits will appear on farmland, dirt, or grass. After harvesting the plant will then produce another fruit every 1-30 minutes. The plant can only produce one fruit at any time. The most effective tool for harvesting pumpkins is an axe, but melons can be harvested with any tool.
Farm Layouts
There are lots of ways to arrange your farms. Here are two suggestions:
Lily Pads
To stop melon slices from falling into the water of your farm, place lily pads on top.
Minecraft Servers
Carrots and Potatoes
Zombies may drop potatoes and carrots However, they can also be located in NPC villages.
They are similar to the cultivation of wheat, except there aren't seeds. Place potatoes and carrots in the field. If you can, keep them hydrated. It is best to wait. The process can be speeded up by using bonemeal. You will get more from your harvest when you harvest your crops.
Both carrots and potatoes can be eaten raw, but it is better to bake the potatoes in a furnace first.
Beetroot
Another crop that can be located in villages is beetroot. When you harvest beetroot you will receive both Beetroot and Beetroot Seeds which can be replanted.
Beetroot can be eaten raw, or made into Beetroot Soup. You can also make Rose Red dye from it.
Cocoa Beans
Cocoa beans can be found in dungeon chests or on trees in the forest. You can cultivate them by planting them on the side of a Jungle Wood log. Similar to other plants, they will go through various stages of growth before, and when they're ready to harvest, you can pick the beans.
Nether Wart
Nether Wart can only be found in Nether Fortresses however once you've found it you can grow it in any location. It can be planted in Soul Sand and harvested when it is fully grown.
It doesn't require light, but it isn't speeded up by bone meal and you can only grow it in soul sand, not ordinary dirt.
