根據病患病史，臨床表現，理學檢查及初步實驗室診斷，完成嚴重度評估，決定門診或住院治療。 儘速（建議4 小時內）依懷疑的病原菌及肺炎嚴重度選用經驗性抗生素治療。

因應國情、人種差異及國內健保給付制度，醫院不應完全引用 NCCN 診療指引之內容作為該院共識後之指引版本。 因此，建議各團隊經過討論取得各院確立診斷之主要檢查方式的共識後，編修符合院內臨床實作之診療指引內容。 而抗生素使用的不當也會更進一步增加病人發生抗藥性細菌感染的風險。
