Nintendo:
Nintendo unveiled the Gamecube in 2000 and it officially went on sale in 2001 in Japan and North America and 2002 in Europe and Australia. The Gamecube used technology similar to a DVD called an optical disc drive. The Gamecube's weak point was that it lacked a good selection of mature titles, and because it used discs smaller than the average DVD, it could not play movies.
Sony:
The Playstation 2 was the most anticipated gaming console of the 6th generation, it had many 3rd party titles and could play DVDs.
Microsoft:
The Xbox was sold at a loss to obtain market share. Halo was considered the unique selling point of the it. The PS2 from Sony and the Xbox from Microsoft could both utilize the inexpensive DVD-ROM technology, as a result it made it easier for developers to create games for both consoles.
