Alongside the singer Bjork In addition to Bjork and the Northern Lights, one of Iceland's most engaging products is the science-fiction video game "EVE Online." The massively multiplayer online game, which takes place in the future, enables players to explore thousands of star systems in search for adventure. The game, which was first released in 2014, has grown into a virtual experience that is so intricate and mind-expanding that in 2015, the Guardian newspaper dubbed it "the world's largest living science fiction work."



And today, "EVE" players can be more than just conquering imaginary galactic empires. Researchers from Reykjavik University, Geneva and Massively Multiplayer Online Science (MMOS), a Swiss citizen science platform, have teamed up to create the game. This collaboration will let players assist scientists analyze data from astronomy. A minigame within "EVE" lets players categorize and analyze data to narrow down the search for exoplanets outside our solar system. "Once enough players have come to an agreement on the classification of the data it will be sent back at the University of Geneva to be used in refining our search for exoplanets.



EVE players have been enlisted in the past to assist scientists with crowdsourcing efforts. As this 2016 Wired UK article details, many joined Project Discovery's previous project: helping to sort through data to build the Human Protein Atlas. In the course of that endeavor, participants submitted 25 million protein classifications according to CCP Games, lightening the burden of busy scientists.

This is awesome! Michel Mayor, a Swiss astronomer was one of the researchers involved in this project. He co-discovered 51 Pegasi B in 1995 the first exoplanet that could orbit a star as the Sun.
