What exactly is Minecraft?

Why is it so popular?

Minecraft is a game that is free-form. It doesn't come with a set of guidelines, or a stated objective players can build and play however they want. It's often seen as a Lego. Lego.

This means that Minecraft players have plenty of flexibility in terms of the way they play. Players can create a new fantasy world or create an entirely new one from scratch. They can fight villains and seek adventure and they can play alone or with friends.

It is also played at any level. You will need to have a certain level of skill to be able to move on to the next level in a lot of popular games. This can be frustrating for children as young as five who might not have the time or abilities to advance in an activity. Minecraft lets kids create their own adventures at every level.

What do parents need to be aware of?

Age restrictions

Different Minecraft versions have different age restrictions. Certain mods could contain more violence than other. Remember that Minecraft offers an in-game chat. The age ratings vary from 7+ to 13+.

Minecraft's standard terms and conditions state that children who are younger than 13 years old must have parental consent to play. Children younger than 13 are allowed to play Minecraft in the UK without parental permission. However, it's not illegal.

Minecraft is extremely popular with primary school kids regardless of the age limit. It's not inappropriate for youngsters.

Chat functions

There are two kinds of chat in Minecraft: Realms and Server chats. Realm chat is hosted by the game developers, Mojang and moderated by Mojang. They manage it. Server chat is set up by players. Usually players invite their friends to join their Minecraft server and chat. However certain players provide an invitation that allows anyone to join.

Be sure to warn children about the dangers of communicating with strangers online.

Be aware that players may be using discord, or another chat platform that has different safety settings. Make sure children aren't using other platforms for communication.

Chat features on sites allow children to chat with those who have similar interests in gaming. But, there's no way to know who these people might be. Recommendation: Children of any age shouldn't engage in chat with other players in-game unless they are familiar with them.

It's also important that children don't give away any personal information about themselves, or move their conversations into other online forums that may be considered private.

Minecraft YouTube videos

Many Minecraft users love watching fan-made YouTube videos to improve and learn new techniques.

Many of these videos are suitable for children. Minecraft doesn't have any explicit content, but some of the videos contain monsters, trolls, spiders and zombies, which some kids may find scary. Some videos have explicit or sexual commentary and some encourage bullying. These videos might be suitable for you.

You can try searching for 'profanity-free Minecraft servers'. Even then, it's worth checking the videos before children are old enough to watch them.

You can also enable YouTube's Safety Modeto block age-inappropriate content.

Listen to the Parent Zone's podcast, Tech Shock.

Reporting functions

Minecraft currently doesn't offer an instant "report" function. Your child should be careful when joining a server. Your child could be exposed to insulting language and abusive comments if they are gaming with an older person. However, Minecraft do reserve the right to remove any player who violates the terms and conditions.

You can complain about players by going to Minecraft's helpdesk and submitting complaints. This could be something an adult should do instead of a child since it's a bit complicated.

You can report any user who violates the rules to a moderator who is able to ban them.

Do you have something you dislike? You can email [email protected] to submit comments and feedback.
