Epic Games 'definitely Won't' Follow Minecraft NFT Ban

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says his firm "definitely won't" follow Minecraft developers in banning nonfungible tokens (NFTs).

As previously reported, Minecraft developers Mojang Studios banned NFT integrations on Wednesday since it believes the speculative nature of NFTs as well as the risk of exclusion and frauds associated with NFTs being incompatible with the game's fundamentals.

While the NFT community was extremely critical of the move, the crypto-skeptics were overwhelmingly supportive.

The company of Sweeney's is the one responsible for Fortnite the battle royale game that's very popular. It is also considered a Metaverse platform. While Epic Games isn’t necessarily pro-crypto and NFTs, its CEO said that the company isn’t trying to force any opinions on the subject to its users.

Developers should be free to create their own games, and you can decide whether or not you want to play them. I don't think that stores or operating system developers should force their opinions on other people. We shouldn't.

In response to the post, Twitter user Low5ive asked Sweeney if Epic Games' policy on prohibiting "hateful/discriminatory content" differs from this. In reply, Sweeney suggested that Epic Games does make "editorial" decisions, but NFTs don't currently fall under them.

"A store could decide to not make such decisions and play anything that is legal, or opt to draw a line at the norms that are accepted by the majority of people as we do, or choose to accept only games that are in line with the owner's personal beliefs," he said.

The NFT ban by Mojang Studios has left one particular project dubbed NFT Worlds with a significant problem to solve, given that it was built on one of Minecraft's open source servers.

Play-to-earn (P2E), an online platform that is driven by the community for play-to earn (P2E) offers an entire NFT and crypto-based ecosystem built around. The NFTs it uses generate 51,000 Ether (ETH), which is $80.8 million worth of trading volume at the time. However, its NFT floor price has fallen from 3.33 Ethereum down to 1.01 ETH since the news came out. In addition, its native token WRLD fell 55% in the same time frame.

Following the Mojang announcement the NFT Worlds team stated it is currently "brainstorming solutions" on how to move forward. The team said they are in touch with Minecraft to come up with a solution. If not, a shift to an "Minecraft-like game engine" or GameFi platform has been suggested as possible options.
