Minecraft: new Marketplace For Community Creators

Minecraft A new marketplace for community creators By Steffan Powell Newsbeat reporter

10 April 2017

Minecraft hopes to make it easier for players to avail of the content created by community members and fans.

Many players have already created complex worlds to explore, adventures to play or even modify the game itself to give new experiences within it.

They'll now be able to officially sell that content through the game itself the brand new Minecraft Marketplace.

Producer John Thornton told Newsbeat that the platform is designed to help entrepreneurs start businesses.

Until now people who create adventure maps skin packs for characters, or other experiences for the game have not been allowed to sell them directly to other players.

Official Minecraft content is not sold this way. However, a few players still earn a living from the game.

James Delaney is the founder of Blockworks, an organization of Minecraft creators. He's been able create a business despite all of the restrictions.

The Marketplace is a welcome development for him.

He said to Newsbeat that he hopes it will be the start of a regular and steady income.

"In the past we've been relying on commissions to come in but you're not certain when that will happen."

He is the responsible person for 62 creators who work in 20 countries.

Their main source income is from the creation of Minecraft-based material for educational and marketing campaigns.

James "got really into" creating Minecraft maps with his friends online and realized in the following years that there was a way to earn money.

He says, "At least now we are aware that there is a market for our content."

"If it is successful it will mean that we will be able to work on a consistent and stable basis."

"Also, it's content that we can decide to create instead of being asked to create. We have the creative control over it."

The marketplace will launch later this year and will be accessible on Windows 10 and Pocket versions of the game.

This means that the majority of the estimated 120 million players of Minecraft worldwide will be able to access it, although people who play on consoles won't.

John Thornton states, "Our vision is for us to work towards connecting creators and players."

"On Pocket edition, it can be difficult to get content onto devices. This makes it difficult for creators and users to share their content with the world.

"By connecting creators to the marketplace , it'll make it much easier for players to discover something they want to play with, then purchase it and have it on their devices."

Players will be able to access them for free, meaning players can still make community experiences.

Producers hope that consumers will pay more for content that is easy to find.

John says, "If you want people to share content right now, you must put it on the internet and inform them of the location."

"You can make use of existing social media platforms to accomplish that, but it's way more effective to bring this into the game in itself.

"Players, in the context of playing the game they enjoy, can just choose what they'd like to do."

He hopes that the game will help James to establish an effective business.

The Minecraft team has launched the new service with nine creators from all over the globe.

The central Minecraft team will monitor the adventure maps, skin packs, and other experiences to ensure that they are appropriate for the game's audience.
